Medical Massage in Seattle
A problem-focused session planned around what hurts, what changed, and what you need to do again
← Back to Services
Medical massage is massage therapy organized around a specific problem. At our Belltown clinic, we specialize in pain and injury work and in the procedures that come with VA Community Care referrals administered in our region by TriWest, auto-insurance PIP claims, Washington L&I, CorVel-managed workers’ compensation claims, City of Seattle workers’ compensation cases, and personal injury cases. That may mean restricted movement, a soft tissue injury, or recovery after a car accident, work injury, or surgery. You do not need to diagnose yourself or choose a technique before booking. Tell us what changed, what makes it better or worse, and what you need your body to do.
What medical massage means here
At Maxwell, “medical massage” describes both the clinical focus of the session and our experience handling the documentation and billing around injury and authorized-care programs. Maxwell Massage grew out of a chiropractic office that saw many of these cases and worked closely with massage therapists. For roughly four years, injury claims and authorized care have made up a large part of our work. That experience built the intake, charting, billing, and care-coordination routines behind the session. It is not a claim that our providers hold a separate medical-massage license. They are Washington-licensed massage therapists who work within massage therapy’s scope and refer medical questions outside that scope to the appropriate health care provider. What happens in a session
Your therapist starts with your history, current symptoms, relevant diagnoses or restrictions, and the activities the problem interrupts. They may look at comfortable range of motion and ask which movements reproduce the complaint. Treatment and pressure are adjusted as the session progresses. At the end, the therapist records how you responded and discusses whether another visit, a different approach, or medical follow-up makes sense.Conditions and treatment goals
People come to us for concerns including neck pain and stiffness, headaches, shoulder pain, sciatica and low back pain, nerve symptoms, TMJ and jaw pain, and car accident recovery. These pages explain what massage can address and, just as importantly, when symptoms need medical evaluation instead.Techniques follow the problem
The technique is chosen for the person and stage of recovery. A session may combine deep tissue massage, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, trigger point therapy, or gentler work. Deep pressure is not automatically more clinical, and it is not appropriate for every body or every injury.Referrals and coordinated care
You can book a self-pay session directly. If a doctor, chiropractor, physical therapist, or other provider is involved in your care, bring the diagnosis, restrictions, referral, or claim information you have. VA Community Care requires a current referral and authorization; TriWest is the VA’s third-party administrator for Community Care Network Regions 4 and 5, including Washington. Work-injury paths differ: Washington State Fund claims run through L&I, some self-insured employers use CorVel, and the City of Seattle administers its own workers’ compensation claims. Contact us before relying on coverage so we can confirm which payer, administrator, authorization, and documentation rules apply. How billing works
Eligible auto PIP claims and workers’ compensation claims are billed directly after the claim details are confirmed. This includes Washington L&I claims and cases we handle through CorVel or the City of Seattle when the claim authorizes massage. Authorized VA Community Care visits are billed under the referral. For commercial insurance, we are out of network: you pay at the visit and we provide a Superbill for you to submit. Washington’s Office of the Insurance Commissioner explains that PIP is optional coverage, applies regardless of fault, and is subject to the limits and terms of the policy.Documentation for PIP and personal injury cases
PIP cases often involve a personal injury attorney who needs a clear record of treatment and charges as the case progresses. With the patient’s authorization, we can coordinate with the attorney or case manager and provide the requested chart notes, treatment records, detailed medical ledger, invoices, and case updates that we maintain and are permitted to disclose. We understand how massage treatment fits into a larger injury case and keep the documentation organized from the start rather than trying to reconstruct it later. When medical evaluation comes first
Massage should not delay diagnosis or urgent care. New weakness, spreading numbness, severe or worsening headache, confusion, suspected fracture, fever, unexplained swelling, or symptoms after a significant collision need appropriate medical assessment before massage. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health advises patients not to use massage to postpone seeing a health care provider and notes that vigorous techniques require additional precautions for people at increased risk of injury.Therapists Who Offer This
